The Most Desirable Skills to Land Your Dream Job
So, you are in the process of putting your resume together to land that dream job. You have built up years of work and life experience and are now only supposed to put it down on two pages.
There is a lot “trimming the fat” that you have to do right?

We know just how tricky it can be to get the right information in and what skills you can really highlight for your resume to stand out to those hiring managers.
The first thing you have to know is the difference between hard and soft skills.
Hard skills are the technical skills, knowledge and training that you have built up over the years in your professional career.
Soft skills are the personal habits and traits that you have built up over the years that dictate how you work with others and by yourself.
So, with that behind us, let’s jump straight into what skills you need to include. We will mention five hard skills and five soft with a few explanations and what you should also avoid at all costs.
This is a great hard skill to list if you are. It opens up a whole lot of international possibilities for you as you can be utilized by your organization. When applying for an international company, make sure you list this as one of your top hard skills.
What you should avoid at all costs is listing that you can speak another language if you only really learnt it in school. French in High School does not really count unless you have actually kept up with it, can read, write and understand it. Also remember to list your ability in it. If you cannot write, make that clear.
Project Management Skills
Getting a certificate in project management is one of the most useful courses that you can go on. It can be used across multiple industries and can be applied in various job titles. You will learn how to meet deadlines, budget, plan, strategize and how to effectively lead a team.
Once again here, if you took part in a group project in school or varsity, this does not count. Make sure you include your certification number.
This does not include you being able function in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Google. This is, by the year 2020, thoroughly expected of anyone in the job market. Do not also bother putting that on your resume. You are simply wasting space.
By computer technology, we are talking about your hard skills that you have developed over the years in the IT sector. Have you done web design, have you learnt to code, can you take a computer apart and put it back again, do you know your way around a server room? If you said yes to any of that, this should be slipped into your resume.
Any Kinds of Certifications or Licenses
Ok, maybe not any. If you are applying for a job, no-one really wants to know that you hold a certificate for eating 20 hotdogs in 30 seconds.
But here, any professional certificates or licenses that you have studied, paid for, passed exams for or achieved over the years needs to be included. Especially if you are applying for something within the industry. Remember to include the date of issue and the necessary details. You might also need to include a copy.
Technical or Analytical Skills
If you have acquired any skills in the technical, science, engineering, data or computer fields, list them! Becoming proficient at a software or a system should be one of the first things that you should include under your skills.
Here are some examples of what you should absolutely include:
- Lean manufacturing;
- Multivariate analysis;
- Linear regression;
- Data mining;
- Data engineering;
- Database management.
This is certainly one skill that all employers look for when hiring. Are you a good listener, can you communicate effectively, are you able to negotiate?
Things like telephone skills, email writing, public speaking and presentation skills are all highly sought after. They will need to know that you can not only communicate with colleagues, but with clients, vendors and management.
All hiring managers look for teamwork as a soft skill. Whether or not you are working in a close team, it is important to know that you can work with others. Accepting feedback, delegation, empathy, conflict management, self-awareness and social skills are important skills to have in any organisation.
You might be thinking to yourself that in this day and age of remote working, that this might not be as necessary. However, it is almost more important now as you are relying more on your colleagues and they are on you to get things completed without being around each other. So, being able to function in a team online is a great skill to have.
Leadership skills are key, especially when applying for a more managerial position, or for a position that has the possibility of becoming management.
Here, conflict management, people management, delegation, negotiation, mentoring, coaching and supervising are all very sought after skills. These do, naturally, develop after a few years of being in the position, and learning them hands on, so you will be able to add them once you have become a team leader or supervisor.
The last skill that we are going to have a look at is work ethic. We have included this as it is an all-encompassing skill of what the company can expect you to bring to the working environment. This is essentially how you conduct yourself at work and how you approach your job.
Things like time management, punctuality, business etiquette, planning, dedication, loyalty, independence, dependability and trainability are all critical skills. Hiring managers need to know that you will not only be a good fit in the company culture but that you will conduct yourself with integrity and respect in the working environment.
